Essence Highlights Sistas Rooting for…Romney?

Let’s be clear.

I am a voter.

I am Independent because my allegiance is always issues-driven – not party-driven.

And I trust God more than government. In fact, Romans 13:1 even says, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”

But while God is in control, we all are obliged to exercise our right to vote. With  thousands  of eligible voters who do not, it impacts us all. Real talk. Not voting is like voting for the wrong candidate. So why do you choose who has your vote?

Let’s not assume the stereotype: that black votes mean more for President Obama. In fact, let’s put a double whammy. How about black women?  As a woman with friends of all races, I have not met very many women who in light of issues of birth control and insurance,  who are cheerleaders for the GOP nominee. However, some like the fact that Mitt Romney is a businessman, and others don’t like the moral compass the Democrats are going in.  So while there’s no perfect party or candidate,  how do you choose?

For some the anwer is clear cut. Others it is up in the air but for six women of color, they already have their Romney pom-poms out.  ESSENCE News Editor Wendy L. Wilson catches up with a few Republican sisters to find out why they're rooting for Romney to beat President Obama this November.  And I imagine openly declaring this may be hard for some. Like  Kimber Gillus, 29-Year-Old Resident of Brooklyn says, “Being a Republican has alienated people in my personal life, family and friends.” She goes on to defend her decision saying, “No one ever said it would be easy to live this life as a conservative Black woman. If I have to endure that kind of abuse and borderline harassment for that decision, I’m okay with it. I’ll just have to deal with it.”

So would you let politics affect your relationship with someone you love? A homegirl? A mate? It’s food for thought. In the meantime, want to see the six  sistas who have Mitt’s back? Click here.
