The Black Girls Rock! Vision and Pledge

While I love all girls, I believe it is important our girls of color be edified and helped to pursue excellence in their lives. I say this for many reasons. As I work with young girls, I see them struggle with their appearance. Not realizing less is more, they do so much to live up to media images, compete with girls of other ethinicities that are catching the brothers eyes and lose themselves trying to re-enact the life of reality stars. I listen as some of them harbor resentment for the lack of stability in their home or neighborhoods. I hurt to watch them try to make something out of nothing.
But with the right people, opportunities and self-love, they can make it.
Last night BET aired BLACK GIRLS ROCK! We hear the phrase “rock” used on a regular but for this, it's meaning came from a vision and a t-shirt. DJ Beverly Bond began her entertainment career spinning the turntables at the hottest clubs for crowds that included celebs. Now she’s using her voice and talent to show black girls that they rock. Since 2006, Bond’s organization, Black Girls Rock Inc., has empowered adolescents and teens to expand their minds via the arts. When asked by Black Enterprise how did her mantra became a movement, Bond says, “First I started the T-shirt and was thinking of all the incredible women to list on it. I was writing down all of these names and just couldn’t fit them all. In my attempt to try, I said, ‘This is bigger than just a shirt.’ So I decided to start a mentoring program.” She garnered support through organizational management and good marketing. Bond revealed, “Black Girls Rock grew because the need was so great. Women have been speaking out about the negative images of Black women in the media. I’ve seen some powerful women who have said and done great things. The way I marketed Black Girls Rock … I said, ‘Here’s another option: Consider the greatness among black women.” She networked, collaberated and now the movement is star-studded and invests in our girls. Surrounding yourself with giving people of a like mind and passion can create momentum and opportunities that impact others. Let's pledge to connect our resources of vision, talent, finances and time to help our own girls here in KC rock! In fact, let's take the pledge as women and pass it to the girls in our lives:
