Even Black Barbie Is Having a Hair Battle!

I had a Christie Barbie - you know, Barbie's black BFF. Though she was a woman of color, Christie did not look like me or any of the girls I saw in my family. Just in time for the holidays, Mattel launched a new line of black Barbie
dolls with fuller lips, a wider nose and more pronounced cheekbones — a
far cry from Christie! (Sidebar: She was essentially a white doll painted brown. Really.)
Anyhoo, the "So In Style" line hit mass retailers last month. Barbie designer Stacey McBride-Irby, who is
black and has a 6-year-old daughter, said she wanted to create a line
of dolls for young black girls that looked like them. Plus, these sistas are
inspirational and career-minded! I love it because our girls need to see images they can relate to and promote healthy esteem. I can get these dolls for my nieces and there is one that they see some of themselves in. But with every good thing, comes critics. One element being criticized?
The hair issue.
There is a So In Style hairstyling set so girls can curl, straighten and style their dolls' hair over and over. Click here to read why this upsets some people.
