Mary J. Blige's Center For Women Opens In Yonkers

R&B singer Mary J. Blige gave back to her hometown of Yonkers, New York earlier this week, when she opened her new facility, the Mary J. Blige Center for Women.

Blige and Hip-Hop mogul Steve Stoute founded the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN) in 2008, as a way to encourage women by supporting educational programs, career development, self-esteem and personal growth.

Blige and Stoute are initially concentrating the foundation’s focus on Yonkers and the surrounding communities of West Chester, although plans are underway to service the entire country.

Blige announced the center’s opening during an emotionally charged press conference, that brought the R&B singer to tears.

Morehouse Steps It Up...

In an attempt to eliminate “inappropriate attire,” prestigious HBCU and private institution Morehouse College has adopted a policy that bans sagging and other styles associated with Hip-Hop culture. The “Appropriate Attire Policy” initiative is the product of Morehouse President Michael Franklin, who is seeking to reestablish what he’s coined as the modern “Renaissance Man.” That individual, Franklin states, possesses the “5 Wells” of being well-spoken, well-read, well-traveled, well-dressed, and well-balanced. Sagging is said to have originated in the penal system, where prisoners were unable to keep their pants up due to belt confiscations to prevent suicides and murder. Although viewed as a style for juveniles, some prominent Hip-Hop artists in their 30s and 40s still utilize sagging in videos, concert, and award show appearances. Along with the new sagging ban, students will not be allowed to sport any form of grillz, do-rags, hats, “stunna shades,” hoods, or pajamas to class. ...

Chuck D Chides Gucci Mane; Praises Jay-Z

Chuck D, the front man of Public Enemy, offered his opinion of Jay-Z and Gucci Mane during an interview on AllHipHop Radio's morning show Eric B and Friends earlier in the day.

The rapper expressed his admiration for Jay-Z from a career point of view, and stressed that he was impressed with The Blueprint 3 album.

"On Jay-Z - quote me on this - Jay-Z is the Rookie of the Year in 2009. You want to know why? Because at age 40, he is just getting started," Chuck said this morning. "He is simply forwarding the artform. Just imagine if he decided to pick up two more languages to add to his craft. He is #1." (Editor's note: Jay-Z turns 40 in December.)

Tiny Speaks On T.I.’s Status and Atlanta Violence

Fresh off an appearance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, TV star Tameka “Tiny” Cottle recently gave an update of her husband’s current condition and the tragic violence that’s hit her inner circle.

Earlier this month, Tiny’s former Xscape bandmate and Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burrus lost her fiancée Ashley “AJ” Jewell.

His death was the result of injuries sustained in a fight at an Atlanta strip club.

Coupled with the brutal shooting death of former boxing champion Vernon Forrest in July, Cottle revealed that T.I. urges her to remain close to home to prevent becoming a target.
