The Hickman Mills Prevention Coalition serves the Hickman Mills community which is roughly 32 square miles in southern Jackson County, Kansas City, Missouri. The coalition has been utilizing existing data from the Kauffman Teen Survey, Kansas City Police Department, US Census Bureau, COMBAT, and other local organizations. In addition, the coalition has conducted focus groups, compiled a needs assessment, and obtained anecdotal data.

Based on the evolving needs of the community, the work of the coalition is critical. According to census 2000 data, the general population is very different than the student population of the Hickman Mills C-1 School District. Consequently, use of culturally competent practices in engaging the community is critical to the coalition’s success.

HMPC is a group of concerned citizens and parents who have the intention of keeping the youth of their community drug free. HMPC members include youth and members of Youth for Change, officers from Jackson County and Kansas City police force, Hickman Mills C-1 school board officials, Pastor Israel Steinmetz of the Church of God 7th Day church, Pastor Ron Lindsay of Concord Fortress of Hope Church, teachers from Hickman Mills, Ruskin, and O’Hara high schools and St. Regis, Ervin Middle, and Smith-Hale Middle, President Dennis Dean of South Suburban Junior Football Association , as well as an overwhelming number of parents, local businesses, etc.
