Her long, shiny shag cut was enviable; her small waist emphasized by her half top raised my eyebrows; and then the dancing?
I tried to re-create it in my bedroom!
Fast forward decades later, I still have Janet admiration. Though she has had her weight issues, triggered by emotional seasons of depression, I love the fact she snaps back into shape. Janet recently turned 46 and still has the physical prowess of a 20 something! And who can forget those rock hard abs she teases us with every now and then? We know she exercises and practices healthy eating. No doubt, she can afford her own trainer and chef! But are there some things we can glean from Ms. Jackson-If-You’re-Nasty? Sure there are.
The goal is never to “look” like anybody other than you. By no means ...

Words of Wisdom for College Grads: Class of 2013

It’s that time for college graduations! After walking across the stage, students eagerly with hints of fear walk into life. While job reports may be dismal in some fields, this is a start of a great journey for our college grads. But even though there may be challenges, there are lessons to learn during the transition and new season of life.
Life coach Valorie Burton wrote a piece this week, 5 Tips for Recent College Graduates. Check out what she says to the class of 2013:
1. Go for what you really want.
Don't downsize your dream before you've even attempted it. Go directly for the type of job you want while simultaneously being flexible. It is a challenging job market, but it is not impossible. Remember the phrase, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among stars." It applies here. Don't allow fear to keep you ...

Another KC Charter Closes... How Do We Close the Academic Gap?

While parents, students and teachers alike are saddened and shocked about the sudden closing of Gordon Parks charter school, due to low test scores which are among the lowest in the state, officials feel there was no choice. “They’ve had 13 years to help these children and unfortunately it’s not happening,” said Sarah Potter, spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

But why wasn’t it happening?

While this school served many poorer families, to me that makes it more essential these children are equipped to compete academically. We know education is one way we curtail gnerational poverty cycles and rebuild broken communities. And we can point fingers at adminsitrators, teachers, and yes parents. All three components are crucial to a child’s acadademic success. Period. The schools can’t take all resposnsibility; paretns must be proactive to make sure their kids are not falling behind. The city ...

Stress: The Hijacker of Women's Health

Today is National Women’s Checkup Day, an effort remind women across the country to pencil in appointments with their doctor. My husband laughs at me because I will go to the doc for anything (but with my insurance premium, I want to make good use of it!) But our health is important. Often, we can go to the doctor for one thing and find out there’s another issue lurking beneath the surface. And not all of it starts as a physical ailment. The non-tangible issue that could land us in the doctors office? Stress!

Acute and chronic stress take a greater toll on womens' physical and mental health. Stress can affect nearly every system in the body, and it may be undermining your health in more ways than you realize. What are ways stress manifests itself in our bodies thus impacting our lives?

I’ll just go back to school.” Seems like a good idea, right? One expert says pump your brakes before you re-enroll.

Are there times you should go back to school? Absolutely. But does an advanced degree mean that job will be there? Will the cost of education be more than your earning potential? Robert Chen of Brazen Careerist weighs in. Before you invest your precious time and money to research and prepare for the GREs, GMATs, LSATs or any other standardized exams, he challenges us to look at the assumptions of an advanced degree. We know at one time when you couldn’t get a job or simply didn’t know what you wanted to do, going back to school was a good option. One assumption is you can get ...

Why Women Should Love Themselves....Naked!

I love the PETA "I'd Rather Be Naked Ads" And The DOVE campaigns. They show women who are comfortable in the skin they're in. And then of course, the Allure magazine naked issue where now Zoe Saldana joins the list of fierce chicks who have posed nude for the magazine. These have included Gabrielle Union, Keri Hilson, Jill Scott, actress Regina Hall, and Taraji P. Henson. While I don't suggest just baring it all for all of America to see, women should be at peace with their bdoies unclothed. But many are not.

So how about 60% of women hate being naked? Even by themselves!

In fact, 25% are so bent on not looking at themselves they don’t even own a full-length mirror! The top three body image complaints are saggy stomachs, un-toned thighs and cellulite. Women’s body hang-ups cost them more than just time and money spent ...

Star Phone Interview: Craig Robinson from "Peeples"!

Sparks fly when Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) crashes the preppy Peeples annual reunion in the Hamptons to ask for their precious daughter Grace's (Kerry Washington) hand in marriage. No – you don’t wait until the first date! You play C.S.I. Computer Surfing for Info! Also known as “googling” or as some say, "pre-dating". It seems harmless and after all, if there’s some dirt, you want to know right away before you waste your time. However, using pre-dating methodology before a real date may only give you a snapshot of a person and causes you to miss out on a possible romance that could lead to a committed relationship. Did you know 49% of women would cancel a first date because of something they found out about him online, according to a Match.com study? If you argue, “You can’t find out too much dirt on a person!” Experts disagree and say a resounding yes, you can! ...

Hot 103 Jamz Talks to Ravaughn!

Ravaughn, the beautiful sista with the voice to match, is in KC to put it down for another "Hot 103 Jamz VIP Listening Experience", tonight at The Jukehouse!
