Tomorrow April 5th, is Election Day in Kansas City and the surrounding metro area. The special election includes school board seats and questions regarding sewers and the Health Levy Tax in Kansas City. In Lee’s Summit, there’s a mayoral and city council race, along with school board seats. Lee’s Summit made national news in the past years over student inequities for children of color and racial tension that led to the resignation of the district’s first Black superintendent. In 2020, Megan Marshall became the first Black female on the board; she is now the Vice President on the LSR7 school board. Voters rallied again in 2021, electing the second Black board member, Rodrick Sparks. These historic victories prove voters’ voices can create change.

But it takes more than voting in one or two election cycles.

That’s why we’re talking to Lee’s Summit author, pastor and voting advocate, Lia McIntosh. Lia has been a strong voice that helped efforts to galvanize voters in Lee’s Summit for the previous elections and explains why it’s important to keep voting in all elections, in every zip code.
