10th Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration

October 14, 2020 - November 14, 2020

This year, the Nelson-Atkins Día de los Muertos festival goes virtual. While the museum may not be able to build a collaborative altar and celebrate with you in person, we express our deep gratitude to the artists, performers, and local leaders who have shared their time and talents throughout the past 10 years.

Enjoy video insights into customs and traditions, create your own papel picado, and take a look back at 10 years of highlights through a digital gallery. The Nelson-Atkins is honored to continue its tradition of celebrating and observing this important holiday with Kansas City.

Welcoming remarks for the 10th Annual Día de los Muertos Festival at the Nelson-Atkins from Museum Director & CEO, Julián Zugazagoitia, and Consul Alfonso Navarro Bernachi, Consul General of the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City.

Día de los Muertos Traditions

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration with family and friends gathering to honor and remember deceased relatives and popular figures. The Mexican tradition is observed throughout the Kansas City-metro area, often with festivals, parades, music, and ofrendas, or altars. In addition to the Nelson-Atkins, celebrations are held at the Kansas City Museum, Central Avenue Betterment Association, and the Mattie Rhodes Art Center, which celebrates its 23rd annual Día de los Muertos in 2020.

Enjoy an introduction to Día de los Muertos traditions with Jenny Mendez, Director, Cultural Arts, Mattie Rhodes.
