Love & Hip Hop Miami’s Amara La Negra vs. The Breakfast Club

I admit: I solely watched the first couple of episodes of Love & Hip Hop Miami for Trina, Trick Daddy and Gunplay.

 

Point blank.

 

But in the midst of watching, I found I’m digging Amara La Negra. She brought to light the issue of colorism – which the black community has always dealt with. Colorism is unfortunate; I hope one day we get past it. But what I didn’t think about was how much other ethnicities struggle with it as well. As an Afro-Latina, that’s what she wrestles with. Remember this exchange on the first episode?

After that ignorant mess, folks came for Young Hollywood’s neck.

 

Today maybe he’s breathing a little easier – at least momentarily. Now, they’re coming for the Breakfast Club.

 

During an interview, Amara addressed her struggles with colorism as an Afro-Latina. She explained that she has faced difficulty being accepted in the entertainment industry as a dark-skinned Latina. Amara said, “They’ll always pick the lighter–the ones who look like J.Lo–before they look at us. Who cares if you’re talented? Who’s cares if you’re educated? You’re always going to be the last option.”

 

They seem to dismiss her truth. Check out this clip:
