Today July 1 is “Lucile Bluford Day” in Kansas City. We celebrate the Black feminist, civil rights activist, and journalist. At the height of the civil rights movement, Bluford wrote, edited and published our beloved Kansas City Call newspaper

In 2018, Kansas City native Dr. Shelia Brooks released the book, “Lucile H. Bluford and the Kansas City Call: Activist Voice for Social Justice. ” The story traces the beginnings of Bluford’s activism as a young reporter seeking admission to the graduate program in journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia and details how that battle became the catalyst for her seven-decade career as a champion of racial and gender equality.

Listen in as Dr. Brooks shares more about this award-winning book, Bluford’s activism legacy and the importance of today’s movement towards equality for all.
