This weekend is the 103rd anniversary of Women’s Equality Day. It commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote on August 26, 1920. While racial barriers still existed, women like Ida B. Wells fought tirelessly for the right of all women to vote, despite facing racism within the suffrage movement. But did you know there were Black Suffragists who helped pave the way for women to get the vote right here in Kansas City?
Learn more about them and celebrate this Sunday, at the Blue Room for the “Making History: KC’s Black Suffragists and Jazz Artists” free event from 3-5pm. Dr. Carmaletta Williams, CEO of the Black Archives of Mid-America, shares the details.
