As the Trump administration gives schools a deadline to end DEI programs or risk losing federal money, Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe eliminates DEI programs in state agencies. When some people hear “DEI” they don’t comprehend it’s actual meaning and intent. They think it’s a checkmark to perhaps hire a person of color, a female, someone disabled, etc. regardless of merit.

That is not DEI.

Diversity, equity and inclusion consists of policies that promote representation of individuals – of different ages, races, ethnicities, abilities, disabilities, genders, religions, cultures and more. The purpose is to ensure everyone has the resources they need to access opportunities, and not miss out because of bias (even unconscious) and discrimination. DEI makes it possible to have environments where everyone thrives because of fair policies, while creating a sense of belonging for everyone.

Tonesha Goshon-Brown, Certified HR Professional, talks more on DEI, including the benefits, risks when it’s tossed aside and more.
