On March 7, 1965, in Selma, Alabama, the late Congressman John Lewis and hundreds of foot soldiers were viciously attacked by police while peacefully demonstrating in support of the equal right of all Americans to vote. The brutality of Bloody Sunday galvanized the Civil Rights Movement and led to the passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA). Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965, democracy has been under attack. At a time when our democracy is under constant threat, particularly in Black communities, we must do all we can to protect our sacred right to vote. This Thursday, July 17, 2025 is the 5th anniversary of the death of the late Congressman John Lewis. Cities across this nation are planning an event to recognize his contribution to our country, and to call attention to the need for passage of his Voting Rights Act.

The Missouri Voter Protection Coalition, Carter Media along with other organizations including the Beta Omega and Xi Tau Omega chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Inc®. Carter Media, will be a part of the “Good Trouble Lives On Rally” at the Swope Park Bandstand, from 6-7:30. There will special guests speakers, a mass choir and more. Jenise Comer, from Beta Omega’s Social Justice Committee shares more.
