
We know Black people’s relationship with water has been shaped by historical and systemic racism, which for many led to a fear of swimming and water. This also stems from the denial of access to swimming facilities during segregation. But now, we have the freedom to swim anywhere, but need to break free from the fear of water.
Because it can be a matter of life and death.
While swimming is fun and great exercise, water safety is a necessity. In the aftermath of Malcolm Jamal Warner’s drowning, this topic has been at the forefront.
