Deaf Cultural Festival at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Join us for a free festival celebrating American Sign Language (ASL) during Kansas City’s Deaf Cultural Month. Explore ASL through live entertainment, hands-on art activities, storytelling, poetry and more! All are welcome. ASL interpretation, voice interpretation, and CART (live captioning) provided.

 Activity will have an ASL/voice interpreter.

 

 Activity will have live captioning (CART).

 

PARKING: Garage parking $10, free for members.

Additional parking will be available at the Kauffman Foundation & Kauffman Gardens located at 4800 & 4801 Rockhill Road.

At our ASL Café in Bloch lobby, learn simple signs to order menu items, with assistance from Museum of Deaf History, Arts, and Culture volunteers.

Inspired by the Nelson-Atkins iconic Shuttlecocks, construct and add your personal touch to your own replica, and commemorate the festival with a temporary tattoo!

ASL Storytelling

Watch familiar stories come to life in ASL with storyteller Stephanie Wilcox.

De’VIA Presentation
3–4 pm | Classroom 6

Learn about De’VIA (Deaf View Image Art) from local Deaf artist Takako Kerns, and create your own artwork that explores De’VIA motifs of empowerment and identity.

Cromania with Crom Saunders

Crom Saunders’ one-man show featuring skits that incorporate pop culture, impersonations, improvisation, American Sign language, puns, and physical feats into one big laugh fest.

Quickspeare with Crom Saunders
2:30–3 pm | Atkins Auditorium

“Hamlet” hilariously performed by Crom Saunders, who will become 13 different characters in this version performed at breakneck speed.

Deafinately Dope with Matt Maxey
11:45 am–1pm |  Atkins Auditorium
(Includes opening remarks: 11:45 am–12 pm)

Hard of hearing musician Matt Maxey uses ASL to share music with audiences in a whole new way.


Workshops

Handy Tools for Talking Hands
with Crom Saunders
1–2 pm | Lens 2

Did you know that American Sign Language is more than what you sign with your hands? Join Crom Saunders for an exploration of ASL beyond just vocabulary. Pick up skills that can be applied equally to everyday ASL conversation or to interpreting situations in almost any context. ASL beginners to advanced users are welcome.

Ceramic Workshops with Cicely Boga 
11 am–12 pm
2:30–3:30 pm
Classroom 4 & 5

After a short presentation about her artwork, Cicely invites you to learn the coiling and building technique with clay to create something that is uniquely yours. Space is limited to the first 30 people.

ASL Music Workshop with Matt Maxey 
3–4 pm | Lens 2

In this hands-on workshop, Matt Maxey will guide participants at all levels of ASL fluency through the process of translating a song into ASL.

ASL Art Walk
